This site is run entirely by volunteers. We fund the cost of hosting and maintaining it ourselves, so literally everything we make goes directly to the charities we support. However, the one down side is that we don't have the benefit of a huge advertising budget to tell people about our work.
The good news though is that you don't have to be a marketing professional to help us out! There are lots of things you can do to help spread the word, and even if everybody who reads this just tells one other person about the site then collectively it will make a tremendous difference to the amount of money we can raise.
So, if you wouldn't mind spending a couple of minutes helping us out, here are a few ideas to get you started:
1. Remember to use the site
Most importantly of all, help us to continue to raise money for charity by using the links on Good Buying every time you shop online. An easy way to remember is to add this site to your favourites. You could also set GoodBuying.org as your homepage, or sign up for our newsletter using the form on the left.
2. Tell your friends
If you shop online then the chances are your friends do, and imagine what a difference it could make if a percentage of all their purchases also went to charity. Please remember to email them and tell them we're here, and maybe they'll tell their friends too!
3. Join us on facebook
Show your support, find out who we are, make suggestions for improvement and encourage your facebook friends to visit. We've got a group entitled 'Please Support GoodBuying.org! Come and say hello.
4. Link to us
Even if your website doesn't get much traffic, placing a link to Good Buying on one of your pages is a great help. Search engines use link popularity to help determine the rankings of their search results, so the more website that link to us the higher we'll be ranked... which means the more people will find us!
5. Make use of social bookmarking
Do you use social bookmarking websites such as StumbleUpon or Digg? By adding us to your list of social bookmarks you will be helping us because it's likely that other people will follow your links and find our site. You can find out more about social bookmarking on Wikipedia.
6. Sell something on eBay
If somebody buys something on eBay through our site then eBay will donate between 30% and 50% of their profit on the transaction. If you list something for sale please include a link to us in your item description and encourage your visitors to place their bids via our site. It won't cost them a penny extra, so not only can they grab a bargain but they can benefit charity too!
7. Write about us
Do you write or edit a blog, newsletter or other publication? We're always happy to be written about, and if we spot the story you might even feature on our media page.
8. Use an email signature
Even if you don't have a blog or website you can still tell people about us by adding a signature to your emails. For example:
"Did you know that you can help raise money for charity every time you shop online? Visit www.goodbuying.org and start shopping!"
9. Tell us what you think
What do you think of this site? Do you have any marketing ideas you think we might like to know about? Is there a retailer you use frequently who isn't on here? Have you spotted a broken link or terrible grammatical error that's annoying you profusely? Tell us about it!
10. Help with the running costs
This site is different from other charity shopping sites. Not are we totally not-for-profit but we also fund the cost of running and maintaining it ourselves. The compulsory costs are small but we welcome contributions, perhaps to help with some extra marketing work or fund some promotional flyers. If you do this via PayPal we'll make sure we get back to you and tell you what we spent it on!
